Beaches and the rhythm of the seasons

Whatever the season, the beaches of Île de Ré promise unforgettable experiences, with each season revealing a new facet of the island. (Re)discover these exceptional landscapes all year round.

A beach to suit each mood

With 100 km of coastline, the beaches of Île de Ré are among the most beautiful in Europe. Each type of beach offers its own atmosphere depending on whether you wish to relax on the beach, explore the coastline or enjoy water sports and beach activities.

The most beautiful sandy beaches are located on the south coast of the island, bordered by dunes or forests. From Plage de Gros Jonc (Bois-Plage-en-Ré) to Plage des Prises (La Couarde), wide sandy beaches stretch along the coastline of these two seaside resorts. These beaches are sheltered and ideal for swimming. This is also the case at the northern end of the island, between the Phare des Baleines lighthouse and the village of Portes-en-Ré, with the magnificent Plage de la Conche des Baleines beach.

At the tip of Île de Ré, near the golf course and the Banc du Bûcheron sandbank, the coves of Plage de Trousse Chemise are full of charm, with a feeling of having reached the edge of the world.

In other villages, such as Saint-Martin-de-Ré, La Flotte and Ars-en-Ré, the coastline is rockier with pebbly coves and marinas.

The coastline to the south of the Phare des Baleines lighthouse in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines is quieter and feels more remote, appealing to anglers.

The Sainte-Marie-de-Ré coastline is similar, attracting anglers to its quiet, wilder-looking beaches.

Finally, Rivedoux-Plage is the only village with a harbour and two large sandy beaches, Plage Nord and Plage Sud stretch out from either side of the Île de Ré bridge, providing beach lovers with changing light and sea conditions throughout the day.

Île de Ré beaches through the seasons

In spring, the beaches of Île de Ré awaken with an explosion of colour and life. Wild flowers blossom on the dunes. Mild temperatures are ideal for long walks on the sand, where you can discover the island’s hidden treasures. It is the perfect time to explore the coastal paths on foot or by bicycle, and enjoy the peace and quiet before the summer rush.

In summer, the beaches become the focus of attention. The ocean and its long stretches of fine sand attract families, water sports enthusiasts and beach lovers. There is plenty to do at the beach: swimming, surfing, sailing, paddleboarding, lounging under a parasol…

Autumn brings a gentle serenity to the island’s beaches. The summer crowds dissipate, giving way to a calmer, more introspective atmosphere. Sunsets take on a golden hue and landscapes are transformed by the first fresh breezes. It is the perfect time for beach walks, fishing, or simply relaxing and listening to the sound of the waves.

Winter reveals the wild, untamed beauty of the beaches. Winter weather creates new shapes in the sand, and the waves offer an impressive spectacle. Walks on the beach are invigorating, with fresh, revitalising sea air. It is a time for contemplation and inspiration, ideal for nature lovers and photographers in search of spectacular pictures.

Whatever the season, the beaches of Île de Ré promise unforgettable experiences, with each visit revealing a new facet of this enchanting island. Discover and (re)discover these exceptional landscapes all year round.

Conservation

Dunes are fragile, precious ecosystems, essential to the protection of our coastline and local biodiversity. To conserve these natural areas, it is essential to follow these simple, yet important, rules:

  • Stay on designated footpaths: going off the beaten track can damage sensitive plants and accelerate dune erosion.
  • Do not pick vegetation: dune plants play a vital role in sand stability. Removing them upsets the ecological balance.
  • Respect local wildlife: dunes are home to many species of birds and insects. Avoid disturbing their habitat.
  • Take your rubbish home with you: always take your rubbish with you to keep the dunes clean and safe for everyone. Many beaches have tide bins, in which you can place any rubbish or waste you find on the beach.
  • Be informed: the information panels set up along the trails help you better understand the importance of these natural environments and how to protect them.

Together, we can protect this natural treasure
and preserve the beauty and integrity of the dunes on Île de Ré.
