Accessible walks through the landscapes of Île de Ré

Île de Ré offers several easily accessible routes, designed for people with reduced mobility (PRM). The accessible routes have the French ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ certification, and times and distances have been designed to allow you to discover a variety of landscapes comfortably:

  • Accessible routes through village centres
  • Walks along the coastline
  • Paths through the salt marshes or along the edge of the forest.

These routes allow you to discover the essence of each village in a safe, inclusive setting.

Heritage sites and culture: accessible guided tours

Museums with the ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ certification

Most heritage sites on Île de Ré are open to all. Several museums and cultural sites have ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ certification, guaranteeing accessibility for different types of reduced mobility.

In particular, you can:

  • Discover the history of Île de Ré
  • Learn more about the local flora and fauna
  • Understand maritime traditions and salt production
  • Take part in guided tours of the salt marshes and find out more about salt production.

All the sites have facilities designed to ensure the best possible experience for visitors.

Getting around the island easily

Greener and inclusive modes of transport

Getting around the island is easy thanks to:

  • Accessible electric shuttles linking the villages
  • A bus service equipped for people with reduced mobility (PRM)
  • Accessible bicycles (hired from Cycles N): to encourage independent, environmentally-friendly travel, the island of Ré now has a Tourisme & Handicap-certified accessible bicycle hire company. Cycles N offers equipment designed to meet different needs (physical disabilities, balance, comfort), so that everyone can enjoy the island’s cycle paths with complete peace of mind.

Access to Saint-Martin-de-Ré harbour

The harbour is closed to traffic in the summer (when it becomes a pedestrian area), but access is possible on request from the Tourist Office.

Free use of the Île de Ré bridge

Holders of the ‘Carte Mobilité Inclusion / Invalidité (CMI)’ card can use the Île de Ré bridge free of charge, by applying in advance to the Charente-Maritime département by clicking on this link and following the instructions.

Tourist offices with ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ certification

Destination Île de Ré’s ten tourist offices are certified ‘Tourisme & Handicap’. They offer:

  • Hearing loops
  • Tactile maps
  • Audio guides to the villages
  • Easy Read (FALC) document presenting the island
  • Braille guide to each village
  • Large-print guide to each village
  • Sign Language video presentation of the island.

All Destination Île de Ré tourist office staff are trained to welcome visitors with specific needs.

A destination recognised nationally

The Ministerial Delegation for Accessibility (DMA) has cited Île de Ré and Destination Île de Ré among national best practice in accessible tourism.

Easy Read (FALC) document on Île de Ré

Destination Île de Ré has produced an Easy Read document (known as a FALC document in French). It has been validated by the association UNAPEI 17, and makes it easier for people with comprehension difficulties to discover the island.

This guide presents :

  • Île de Ré’s villages
  • Emblematic sites
  • Accessible beaches
  • Accessible activities.

The document has been designed to facilitate access to information about the island for people with intellectual disabilities or comprehension difficulties. It uses short sentences, simple words (1 sentence = 1 idea). The content is structured and illustrated to make it easier to read.

It has been written in accordance with the official Easy to Read rules, in collaboration with specialised professionals and people it concerns.
