A multi-faceted island
Villages and scenic landscapes
A veritable mosaic of idyllic landscapes, Ile de Ré is made up of ten villages, each with its own unique character, contributing to the richness of the island and its unity. Each village tells its own story, where people and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Cobbled streets lined with hollyhocks, stretches of sandy beach with magnificent views, bustling markets offering a wealth of local produce, restaurants with authentic flavours, historical heritage sites full of fascinating stories, captivating museums and picturesque ports that invite contemplation… All these facets promise an unforgettable experience, to be savoured to the full !
Forest paths and nature reserves are also part of the landscape, accessible by bicycle thanks to 138 km of cycle paths crisscrossing the island. The diversity of natural settings is a reminder that nature is at the heart of island life, and conservation is central to the islanders who live here all year round. Nature outings are organised by the eco-guards, employed to raise awareness and protect the island in a fun and educational way, for all types of visitor : young and old, local and from further away.
Île de Ré is also home to many age-old local skills, including oyster farming, winegrowing and salt production. Île de Ré salt / fleur de sel de l’Île de Ré have been officially recognised as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) since 2023.
