Best villages on Île de Ré: which one is right for your holiday?

Ajouter aux favoris

Choosing where to stay on Ile de Ré comes down to atmosphere, location and the kind of stay you have in mind on the Atlantic coast. Each village has its own rhythm and setting, shaping how you experience the island day to day.

Stretching just 30 km from east to west, Île de Ré is easy to explore in full, with over 138 km of cycle paths linking every village, beach, iconic buildings and salt marshes. Whether you stay for a long weekend or a full holiday break, distances are short and everything remains within easy reach by bike, bus or car.

From Rivedoux to Saint-Martin-de-Ré: easy access, harbour life and first impressions

At the entrance to the island, Rivedoux-Plage offers immediate access and a practical base. Connected directly to La Rochelle via the bridge, it makes moving around simple, whether towards the southern beaches or the northern coastline. It also has the unique position of facing two different seas – the Pertuis Breton and the Pertuis d’Antioche – giving it changing light and sea conditions throughout the day. Well suited to shorter stays and first-time visits.

Further along, La Flotte stands out as one of the most sought-after villages on Île de Ré. Its harbour, lively terraces and daily market under medieval covered halls structure village life. Narrow streets lined with hollyhocks add to its unmistakable charm. Its market is one of the oldest on the island, dating back to the Middle Ages, still held every morning in season. A strong choice for travellers looking for atmosphere, food experiences and a central location.

Close by, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the historic capital and a UNESCO-listed Vauban fortified town, has a more vibrant, urban feel. Its picturesque harbour is lined with cafés, restaurants and boutiques, while the grid of narrow streets creates a lively backdrop throughout the day and into the evening. It also offers the rare experience of walking its 17th-century ramparts, with views over the port and the ocean. Just a short walk or cycle away, the small sandy Plage de la Cible offers a more local, sheltered spot for a swim or a quiet beach break. The long sandy beaches of Le Bois-Plage are only a short bike ride away. It works particularly well if you want everything within walking distance, with direct cycling access across the island.

This eastern section suits first-time visitors, short stays and travellers looking for a central base with plenty of activity.

Sainte-Marie, Le Bois-Plage and La Couarde: beaches, cycling and family stays

Moving west along the southern coast, the landscape opens up and the pace slows slightly, making it particularly well suited to longer stays.

Sainte-Marie-de-Ré stretches along the coastline rather than around a harbour. The atmosphere is quieter and more residential, with direct access to beaches and cycle paths. It is also one of the island’s historic wine-growing villages, with vineyards extending close to the shoreline, a distinctive feature of this part of Île de Ré.

Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré is closely tied to the beach. Known for its long sandy beaches, it’s a favourite for family holidays. Its large daily market, one of the biggest on Île de Ré, with over 200 stalls in peak season makes it a lively focal point. Everything is within reach, making day-to-day life simple and flexible.

La Couarde-sur-Mer sits in the middle of the island, both geographically and in terms of atmosphere. It connects the north and south coasts, making it one of the most practical bases if you plan to explore by bike. It is also considered the geographical centre of Île de Ré, reinforcing its role as a natural hub. The village is bordered by beautiful, wide sandy beaches, making it particularly appealing for beach-focused stays. Beaches, villages and marshes are all accessible within short distances.

This central and southern area works well for families, beach-focused stays and visitors planning to explore the island extensively by bike.

Ars-en-Ré, Loix, Saint-Clément-des-Baleines and Les Portes-en-Ré: marshes, nature and a different pace

Further west, the atmosphere feels a little more remote from the continent.

Loix, slightly set apart on a peninsula, feels quieter and more residential. Surrounded by salt marshes, it’s a good option if you’re looking for calm, with easy cycling routes and access to less frequented areas. It is also the only village almost entirely encircled by marshland, giving it a very distinct sense of place.

Ars-en-Ré is one of the most recognisable villages on the island with its black-and-white church spire and harbour. Beautiful beaches, a lively market and a small, more confidential harbour make it ideal for exploring the western part of the island by bike. The spire itself historically served as a navigation landmark for sailors, visible from far out at sea.

Just beyond, Saint-Clément-des-Baleines marks the wild western edge of the island. It is home to the iconic Phare des Baleines lighthouse, one of the tallest in France, which you can climb for sweeping views over the ocean, forests and coastline. This part of the island feels more exposed, shaped by wind and sea, with long stretches of untamed beaches.

At the far end, Les Portes-en-Ré has a different scale. More remote, close to nature, with access to beautiful sandy beaches, the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve and pine forests, it attracts those looking for a slower rhythm. The reserve is a major stopover for migratory birds, with tens of thousands recorded each year, making it one of the island’s most important natural sites.

This part of the island suits nature lovers, longer stays and visitors looking for quieter, less central locations.
