To guarantee quality bathing water, a number of villages on Île de Ré have adopted a rigorous monitoring policy, and beaches have been awarded the ‘Bathing Water Quality’ certification.
The ‘Bathing Water Quality Assessment Procedures’ guarantee good-quality bathing water for swimmers. This certification enables municipalities to comply with the requirements of European Directive 2006/7/EC, taking into account real-time public information and crisis management in the event of pollution. The certification ensures the quality of bathing water, in line with responsible management practices.
A municipality with this certification is able to inform bathers of water quality in real time, and prohibit bathing in the event of pollution thanks to regular analyses, before rapidly authorising bathing again as soon as the pollution management process is complete.
The ‘Bathing Water Quality’ certification is currently the only standard that lets you know whether the bathing water is safe in your future destination.

Bathing water quality is checked twice a week. These tests are used to prohibit or authorise bathing and water sports activities.
On Île de Ré, as in all municipalities involved in this approach, we apply the principle of ‘open beach: quality bathing water’.
In the event of suspected pollution, a bathing area may be temporarily closed to users while awaiting the results, with the possibility of subsequently reopening it as soon as possible.
Most of the time, water quality on Île de Ré is excellent, as the Regional Health Agency regularly attests, and poses no danger to health.
