Daily hitchhiking on the Ile de Ré!

Everyday hitchhiking on Île de Ré!

Need to get somewhere at the last minute but have no means of transport? Try Rézo Pouce!
This organised lift-sharing system complements the island’s existing transport services, and is up and running across Ile de Ré.

How does it work?

There are 48 stops (between four and six per commune) marked with a Rézo Pouce sign throughout the island. Positioned close to bus stops to encourage easy connections to other transport services, each stop meets safety requirements (ease of access for pedestrians, good visibility of hitchhikers, and safe pull-in spaces for drivers, etc.).

Drivers who would like to take part can register online or at their local council to receive a membership card, a windscreen badge and a destination sign.

Passengers can also register on the mobile app to share their location and travel needs, which can then be consulted by drivers.

Using the system spontaneously

However, registration is not compulsory. Any driver can open their door to hitchhikers, and passengers do not need to be registered with Rézo Pouce to get in. The registration process simply helps develop and secure a practice that responds to a real mobility challenge.

In a rural area with well-developed road infrastructure, Rézo Pouce complements existing transport services effectively. The advantages are numerous: reducing solo car use, decreasing the number of vehicles on the road, and strengthening social links between people… all at the lift of a thumb!
