Discovering local flavours at the markets on Île de Ré
The markets are a gateway to the gastronomic riches of Île de Ré.
Indoors or in the open air, the market stalls overflow with seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheeses, meats, seafood, as well as local specialities, clothing, craft objects and souvenirs inspired by the ocean.
Here, every visit is a sensory experience: vivid colours, the scent of the sea, Île de Ré accents and shared smiles
A showcase for local produce and seasonality
Walking through the markets is where you discover just how much quality and richness Île de Ré’s terroir produces. It is a true showcase of everything harvested here. Thanks to the local producers, visitors can admire, and sometimes even taste, what the island is known for: quality.
Each market is a map of the very best that Île de Ré has to offer, from its seasonal new potatoes, recognised with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), to the generous, succulent oysters and Île de Ré salt, emblematic of the north of the island.
You can even find more exceptional or rarer products, such as samphire(salicorne), the treasure of the marshes, or local wine, full of flavour. Even the second-hand stalls have hidden treasures, with items that are sometimes handmade, and proudly displayed by the stallholders.
