The fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré are unique in size: 14 km of ramparts in a semi-circle with a radius of 1.5 km. They have been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Impressive Vauban fortifications
Completed under the reign of Louis XIV by the engineer Vauban, the fortifications provided shelter for the island’s entire population in the event of an enemy landing.
The walls are also impressive for their sheer size, which can make you feel tiny when faced with this feat of engineering. Part of the network of major Vauban sites, the fortifications can be visited all year round, either self-guided or on one of the tourist office’s guided tours, to discover this style of defence architecture.

Visiting the fortifications
Departing from Plage de la Cible, head for the village of Saint-Martin-de-Ré along the coast for a walk steeped in history.
Along the way, you will pass the citadel and its richly decorated entrance.
Once a penal colony, it is still a major prison today. Continue along its ancient harbour before arriving at Parc de la Barbette.
Climb up to the highest part of the park to admire the view of the Vendée in the distance, before heading for the harbour of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, which blends in perfectly with the fortifications and is also a highlight of the village.
Did you know?
As mentioned above, the citadel is still a prison. It is not open to the public but can be seen from the outside.

The complex military terms and specific contexts surrounding the history of fortifications do not make it easy to learn about Vauban and fortifications.
