The Île de Ré eco-guards: exploring, understanding and preserving the island’s natural environment

Ajouter aux favoris

Unobtrusive yet essential, the Île de Ré eco-guards watch over the natural areas that make the region so unique, day in, day out. Marshlands, beaches, woodlands, salt meadows and wetlands… Through free nature walks, hands-on workshops and awareness-raising initiatives, they invite residents and visitors alike to discover the Île de Ré in a new light, in a spirit of sharing, passing on knowledge and conservation.

Who are the eco-guards on the Île de Ré?

On the Île de Ré, eco-guards are environmental professionals dedicated to protecting local biodiversity. Their mission:

  • To protect sensitive natural habitats
  • To inform and raise public awareness
  • To support practices that respect nature
  • To take part in scientific and ecological surveys

Out in the field all year round, they act as nature ambassadors, listening to both residents and visitors, and working to promote sustainable and responsible tourism in harmony with the landscapes of Île de Ré.

Outings in the countryside to discover the Île de Ré in a different light

Observe nature on tiptoe, day and night

As night falls, let yourself be guided on a quiet walk through the woodlands of the Île de Ré. Accompanied by nature rangers, set off to encounter elusive and fascinating nocturnal animals, then look up at the sky to observe the stars and constellations, in partnership with Ré Astronomie.

An immersive, sensory and soothing experience, ideal for families or nature enthusiasts.

Contribute to our understanding of local biodiversity

Would you like to take practical action to help preserve biodiversity? The eco-guides run participatory science workshops, open to everyone.

Using the free eBird app, participants learn to:

  • Identify bird species
  • Pinpoint the exact location of their sightings
  • Understand the scientific issues related to nature data

Explore the coastline and the treasures of the beach

After high tide, the ocean reveals its secrets. Accompanied by an eco-guide, set off to discover the treasures washed up on the beach: seaweed, shells, driftwood…

An ideal outing to gain a better understanding of the ecological role of the coastline, its biological richness and its fragile balance.

Marshes and wetlands: a precious natural heritage

Community-led nature projects: working together for nature

In the marshes of the Île de Ré, the eco-guards regularly organise participatory nature projects.
On the programme:

  • Site clean-ups
  • Maintenance and restoration of waterways
  • Preservation of the Conservatoire du littoral’s marshes

These friendly morning sessions offer a practical way to get involved in protecting environments of high ecological importance.

World Wetlands Day: understanding and observing

To mark World Wetlands Day, celebrated in early February, the Île de Ré Community of Communes organises free events open to all every year.
