La Couarde was a pivotal village before the northern and southern islets joined at Le Martray. As soon as the railway line arrived on the island in 1898, La Couarde gradually turned to tourism and became the leading seaside resort on the Ile de Ré, thanks to its magnificent sandy beaches and the famous music-hall artist, Mistinguett.
