Exploring the island of Ré with easy access

Accessible walks in the heart of Ré’s landscapes

The island of Ré offers a number of easily accessible routes, designed for people with reduced mobility (PRM) and certified Tourisme & Handicap. The duration and distance of the walks have been designed to provide a comfortable way to discover the island’s diverse landscapes:

  • Adapted routes in the heart of the village,
  • Walks along the coast,
  • Paths through the salt marshes or along the edge of the forest.

These routes allow you to discover the essence of each village in a safe and inclusive environment.

Heritage & Culture: tours for everyone

Tourism & Disability certified museums

The heritage of Rennes is open to all. A number of museums and cultural sites have Tourisme & Handicap certification, guaranteeing a welcome adapted to all types of disability.

In particular, you can :

  • Discover the history of the Ile de Ré,
  • Learn more about the local flora and fauna,
  • Understand maritime traditions and salt production,
  • Take part in guided tours of the salt marshes and find out more about the salt-maker’s trade.

All of them have facilities designed to ensure the best possible experience for visitors.

Enjoying the seaside on landscaped beaches

Each village has at least one supervised, easily accessible beach.

Two beaches have Tourism & Handicap certification:

  • Plage Sud at Rivedoux-Plage,
  • Plage du Peu Ragot at La Couarde-sur-Mer.

Special facilities are available in some communes:

  • Access ramps,
  • Tiralos,
  • Seahorse chairs.

Everything has been thought of to offer you a moment of relaxation by the sea, either on your own or accompanied.

Getting around the island

Soft and inclusive mobility

Getting around the island is easy thanks to :

  • accessibleelectric shuttles linking the villages,
  • a bus service equipped for PRMs,
  • adapted bicycles, with Cycles N: to encourage independent, environmentally-friendly travel, the island of Ré now has a Tourisme & Handicap-certified adapted bicycle hire company. Cycles N offers equipment designed to meet different needs (motor disability, balance, comfort), so that everyone can enjoy the island’s cycle paths with complete peace of mind.

Access to the port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré

The port is closed to traffic in summer (pedestrian zone), but access is possible on request from the Tourist Office.

Free use of the bridge

Holders of the Carte Mobilité Inclusion / Invalidité (CMI) can use the Ile de Ré bridge free of charge, subject to prior application to the bridge manager by clicking on this link.

Staying on the island: accessible accommodation and restaurants

The island relies on a network of committed professionals, many of whom have Tourisme & Handicap certification: hotels, campsites, furnished holiday accommodation and adapted restaurants.

All offer facilities designed for a comfortable, stress-free stay.

Tourisme & Handicap is a government mark that certifies tourist establishments that are accessible according to strict specifications (motor, visual, hearing and mental disabilities).

A certified Tourist Office

Destination Île de Ré’s 10 tourist offices are certified Tourisme & Handicap. They offer :

  • Magnetic loops,
  • Heat-inflated maps,
  • Audio presentations of the villages.
  • FALC document presenting the island
  • Braille presentation of each village
  • Presentation of the villages in large print
  • Sign Language video presentation of the island

All Destination Ile de Ré reception staff are trained to welcome people with disabilities.

A nationally recognised destination

The DMA (Délégation Ministérielle à l’Accessibilité – Ministerial Delegation for Accessibility) has cited the Ile de Ré and its Tourist Office as one of the national best practices in terms of tourist accessibility.

The destination features in the magazine “Le tourisme accessible, des vacances pour tous” (May 2025).

FALC document: information that’s easy to read and understand

Destination Île de Ré offers a FALC (Facile à Lire et à Comprendre) document, validated byUNAPEI 17, to make it easier for people with comprehension difficulties to discover the island.

This guide presents :

  • the villages
  • emblematic sites
  • accessible beaches
  • adapted activities.

This booklet has been designed to facilitate access to information for people with mental disabilities or comprehension difficulties. It uses short sentences, simple words (1 sentence = 1 idea) and structured, illustrated content to make reading more accessible.

The document has been written in accordance with the official FALC rules, in collaboration with specialist professionals and the people concerned.
