Abbaye des Châteliers

Abbaye des Châteliers is a historic gem on Île de Ré. Visit the impressive ruins and be transported to the midst of the 12th century. Located outside La Flotte, in an enchanting island setting, the site is a fascinating testimony to Cistercian architecture.

At a glance

Listed as a historic monument, the abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1156.

It was the starting point for the large-scale economic development of Île de Ré, notably through the introduction of vineyards and salt marshes.

Today, the remains of the Abbaye des Châteliers are majestic in all seasons. Walk through this exceptional site and discover the church, open galleries, cloister garden, refectory…

The site is impressive whatever the weather, and full of sublime photo opportunities. From the abbey, enjoy the view of the sea and Île de Ré bridge in the distance.

The site is freely accessible all year round, and there is a free car park nearby.

The Musée du Platin organises guided tours of the abbey from April to September, to help unravel all its mysteries.

Ruins in an enchanting setting

As you arrive at the site, whether from the coast or from the main road, take a moment to pause and admire the view of the abbey from afar.

In spring, the colours of the surrounding fields of flowers are enchanting, giving the place an idyllic feel. Make your way towards the abbey and read the information panels before immersing yourself in the remains of this mysterious place.

Finally, look out towards Fort la Prée: stones from the abbey were used to build the fort.

At one point, the idea of the bridge arriving at the foot of the abbey was put forward, but Sablanceaux (Rivedoux-Plage) was chosen instead. We can only imagine how different the site would have been!

A place with character, whatever the weather

Visiting the abbey on a cloudy day adds another dimension. A simple grey sky contrasts with the surrounding greenery, accentuating the colours and character of the site.

Visit at sunset for another experience. At dusk, light reflected on the stone of the abbey creates a warm, poetic atmosphere.

Why not also visit at night? Under the moon and stars, the site is particularly magical.
