[CLOSED] La Maison de la Dune

  • Historic site and monument
Forêt du Lizay, 17880 Les Portes-en-Ré

Description

La Maison de la Dune is set in a remarkable site, on the top of the dune, to the west of the beach of Petit Bec. It overlooks Conche des Baleines. It is a former forest house built in 1852 and renovated in 2009. It used to be a shelter for the employees of the Forests and Waters Office.
Until 2025, the Maison de la Dune site was an exhibition centre explaining the importance of protecting the dune and its environment: the need to preserve dunes that are particularly exposed but essential on an island situated mostly below sea level; the importance of forests for the entire ecosystem; and the promotion of responsible tourism. Today, access to this site is no longer possible due to dune erosion.
