Prolong summer and prepare for winter

After the autumn equinox in late September, as memories of relaxing on the beach are fading, a new, quieter time begins on the island. Autumn is full of subtlety, mystery and magical light.

Enjoy Île de Ré at a more peaceful time of year. It is time to reconnect with nature.

Explore the island in autumn  Relaxation, discovery and nature

The tourist season comes to an end at the beginning of November. The pace of life slows down, and the island has fewer visitors.

Like nature itself, Île de Ré changes in the autumn. The temperate climate imbues the island and its villages with tranquillity. Autumn is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

Discover the island’s villages and nature differently

Île de Ré reveals itself differently in autumn. Visit the peaceful villages with your family and friends, or as a couple. Walk through the narrow streets and visit the monuments open at this time of year, such as the Phare des Baleines lighthouse, the Abbaye des Châteliers, the churches, fortifications and many other heritage sites.

Enjoy walking or cycling along the seafront and through the heart of the island’s villages, passing through picturesque vineyards, woodland and marshes.

The autumnal light is splendid and captivating. Sunsets retain their magic, as the sky blazes with shades of orange, red and purple.

Guided tours of the island’s various ecosystems can be invigorating in autumn. Take this opportunity to learn about the island’s plants and wildlife (Discovery safari).

A haven for migratory birds, the ornithological reserve Lilleau des Niges in the north of the island is the ideal spot to observe them.

With the arrival of cooler temperatures and waning sunlight, autumn is also a time for cosiness.

It is the perfect time to visit local producers, the island’s covered markets, and enjoy the benefits of good food and drink!

Prepare for winter by visiting a relaxing spa or seawater thalassotherapy spa with loved ones or alone.

You will leave the island feeling energised, serene and with wonderful memories.

Autumn activities

While summer and spring offer a plethora of outdoor activities, autumn is a time for slowing down, yet still has many activities for visitors.

Have just as much fun on the island as in the summer! Water sports are popular with well-equipped surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers during this period, and are possible weather permitting.

If you are looking for a family-friendly nature activity, treasure hunts are a fun way to discover the island. Go on a walk using the ExploRé app, which guides you through the heart of the island’s countryside and features engaging virtual characters.

Museums open at this time of year also offer a wide range of cultural and fun activities for children.

While visiting, adopt the Île de Ré pace of life, and cycle across the island from south to north. The clearly-indicated cycle paths are the perfect way for the whole family to cycle, and maybe even remove the stabilisers on children’s bicycles. The perfect adventure for young cyclists!

Did you know?

Île de Ré has a microclimate, making it mild all year round. The microclimate is due to the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current originating in Florida and the Bahamas, which disperses into the Atlantic Ocean and is extended by ocean currents. With over 2,300 hours of sunshine per year, Île de Ré is a year-round destination.
