Come and admire the former Hôtel des Cadets-Gentilshommes in Saint-Martin-de-Ré
The Hôtel des Cadets-Gentilshommes, built in 1776 by Louis-Joseph Bailly des Écotais, was originally intended for flats rented to the Hôpital Saint-Honoré. In 1780, it was acquired by the King and became the Hôtel des Cadets-Gentilshommes. After the Revolution, it housed various administrative departments, including those of the Navy from 1793. In the 19th century, the hotel was rented out to various institutions. In 1886, following a conversion, it housed the post and telegraph services, and in 1891 the town hall moved there after a fire. In 1907, the town bought the building from Ernest Cognacq, with the intention of creating a museum.
Listed as a historic monument in 1965, it now houses the town hall and post office of Saint-Martin, while retaining its original style with stone fireplaces and three separate staircases that served the original houses.
