The Pont de Ré toll to benefit environmental action!
The Ecotax is a departmental right of way owed by users of land motor vehicles that use the bridge linking the Ile de Ré to the mainland(article L.173-3 of the Code de la Voirie Routière).
Until December 31, 2011, toll revenues were used to repay the loan that allowed the bridge to be built in 1988.
Since January 1, 2012, they have been earmarked exclusively for financing the maintenance of the bridge, the development of clean energy transportation and actions to protect, manage and enhance the natural areas of Reta.
A multiparty agreement defines a method of distributing the Ecotax revenue between the Charente-Maritime Departmental Council (45%) and the Ile de Ré Community of Communes (55%). Each of the 10 communes of the island receives from the Community of Communes a fixed base of 50 000 € to which is added a complement proportional to the surface area of natural spaces acquired by the General Council and the Conservatory of the Coast on each commune.
A real chance for the environment of the Retais, this financial contribution of about 6 million euros per year (Conseil Départemental de la Charente-Maritime – 45% and Communauté de Communes de l’Ile de Ré – 55%), is today the cornerstone of a coherent and proactive policy in terms of preservation and management of natural areas.
