👨👩👧👦 Population: 2 320 (according to INSEE (equivalent to ONS) in 2020)
📏 Surface area: 4,52 km2
Rivedoux-Plage is the first of the 10 villages on the Île de Ré, located at the entrance to the island just after the 3 km bridge. A unique viewpoint bordered by the Pertuis Breton and the Pertuis d’Antioche, facing La Rochelle.
You’ve just crossed the bridge over the Ile de Ré and you can see the Pointe de Sablanceaux as you arrive: two long strips of fine sand line both sides of the village.
To the north, a large bay with a white sandy beach faces the Vendée coast. To the south-east, another large stretch of sand offers views of La Rochelle and the Île d’Aix. A few hundred metres further along the south-east coast, towards the Pointe de Chauveau, you reach small cliffs where, at low tide, you can see the remains of old fish locks.
On the north side, you pass through the quiet, family-friendly village, along the harbour promenade and flower-lined alleyways, until you reach the oyster beds lined up in the Breton inlet.
On the other side, to the south, Rivedoux-Plage, with its two kilometres of sandy beach, is a great place to relax or try your hand at water sports. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular on both sides of Rivedoux.

Rivedoux-Plage was originally a small fishing port and the Pointe de Sablanceaux an immense sand spit in constant evolution.
In the 17th century, this village became a strategic defence point for the Île de Ré.
Formerly a village/quartier dependent on Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, Rivedoux-Plage became a commune on 28 February 1928. Historically, it was the first oyster-farming village on the Île de Ré and the first holiday resort before the bridge was built in 1988 and it became a more residential commune.
Discover the history and heritage of Rivedoux through the Redoubt built to Vauban’s plans in 1674, the fountain, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes and the 30-metre-high Chauveau lighthouse, the only lighthouse at sea in Charente-Maritime, which dominates the foreshore of Rivedoux’s southern beach.
The small fishing port of Rivedoux-Plage and the oyster-farming bay are nestled at the tip of the east coast of the Île de Ré, bordered by the Breton inlet and facing the coast of the Bay of Aiguillon. Just a stone’s throw from the shops and market, a beautiful jetty invites you to take a stroll or go angling or plaice fishing. In the small harbour, a few moorings are reserved for visiting yachtsmen.
The oyster beds can be seen from the small harbour at low tide, as Rivedoux is a major oyster-farming centre.
You can fish on foot in Rivedoux at low tide during high tides (minimum coefficient of 80) in the rocky and sandy areas. The tourist information offices distribute guides to good practice when fishing on foot, as well as rulers for measuring shellfish and crustaceans.
