🏘️ LE BOIS-PLAGE VILLAGE 🧺

Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, on the south coast of the island, is one of its oldest seaside resorts. Open to the ocean, the commune is proud of the quality of its beaches, which have been awarded the 2015 Blue Flag. The long village can be visited through its winding lanes and alleys, pleasantly lined with hollyhocks from May to September. It’s also a land of mills, once numbering around fifteen, today only the Bellère mill remains. The Ile de Ré winegrowers’ cooperative makes and sells typical, characterful products based on ancestral know-how and the history of the region.

In this commune of around 2,300 inhabitants, talking about the village also means talking about its heritage, its church with its stained glass windows decorated with marine motifs, its shops and its daily summer market, the largest on the island.

Let yourself be guided by the charm of the narrow streets in the village centre, lined with flowers and hollyhocks.

🦴 HERITAGE AND ARCHITECTURE 🍇

Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré has revealed a number of archaeological remains dating back to prehistoric times, providing evidence of the age of human settlement in the area. In the 15th century, the village was already quite large but had no parish as it was attached to Saint-Martin-de-Ré. A commune with a history of winegrowing, the village still has many examples of winegrowers’ residences, recognisable by their large 2 or 3 storey facades and their carriage doors.
